Although Stephen had served as an elected School Commissioner of Broome County for several terms, in 1881 he took the position of principal of the Great Bend graded school.
Great Bend is about 11 miles from his home at that time. Family stories indicate he rode a bicycle later in life for his job as Truant Officer, and we know he was cited in 1885 in Owego for riding on the wrong side of the street. Did he ride a bicycle to Great Bend daily, even in the winter?
The picture looks like it could be the one in the 1962 newspaper description of the school published on the centennial anniversary.
