Edward Newport’s First Profession

“After that he pursued the study of lithography very successfully, and combined therewith the study of music, anatomy, and physiology, taking great delight also in mastering the English language and familiarizing himself with its literature.”1

While Edward initially pursued lithography as his profession, we see that his curiosity in anatomy and physiology also emerged during his secondary school years. His dedicated academic pursuits, including English language and literature, paved the way for his smooth transition to the United States where he joined his family in 1859. And, the study of music will have a notable impact on his future.

Edward Newport embodied the ideal mid-nineteenth-century young man, well-rounded with diverse skills and talents. I am reminded of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s German-born husband, who had a significant influence on standards during that century.
